Woods added, however, that she is still “skeptical” about Costco’s ability to ease increased traffic at the shopping center, adding that she has seen gas stations at other nearby locations, such as in Cypress, backed up with lines six to 10 cars deep. “Anyplace that can save me money is a good idea, provided that we mitigate all the concerns of the community.” Signal Hill resident Bruce Troupe said he will be one of the Costco members fueling up when the new gas station opens next year, since he currently has to pump gas at a location in Orange County, where he works, to get the low prices. Murillo said Costco hopes to make improvements to the parking lot before the holiday season, with construction of the gas station expected to be from January to March of next year.Īccording to Costco’s website, gas stations are only open to members, with the exception of Costco Cash Card users, who aren’t required to be members. So this is a big push for us as well. “We think this was a good warehouse location,” Murillo said. Jenifer Murillo, manager of real-estate development for Costco, agreed that a potential increase in sales was a major driver in the retailer’s request for the new gas station, adding that it’s a needed accessory for customers. Signal Hill’s sales-tax consultant has indicated that Costco stores that have gas stations, such as the nearest location in Lakewood, generate 15 to 18 percent higher sales than those without gas stations, with the increase attributed to fuel sales and incremental in-store sales. If you give that a little thought, it will occur to you just how skilled the cutters from the Hunsrück really were. The raw stone was actually held in the cutter's hand during this process. Just as they had been used to doing with agate and other kinds of quartz, the cutters faceted the citrine using large, rotating sandstones over decades. Thus the golden-yellow quartzes made a contribution to Idar-Oberstein's becoming - and remaining - one of the world's great gemstone centres. In Europe, the boom on these yellow to reddish crystal quartzes didn't begin until, in the 1930s, expatriate agate cutters from Idar-Oberstein sent large quantities of citrine back home, along with amethyst and agate, from Brazil and Uruguay. Only a trained specialist can recognise the signs of heat treatment at all, burnt stones having subtle stripes whilst the yellow of natural ones is cloudy. However, in the course of 200 years, its application has become so much a matter of course that most of the stones available in the trade today are in fact burnt amethysts or smoky quartzes. This heat treatment at temperatures of between 470 and 560 degrees has to be carried out very carefully and requires a great deal of experience. Perhaps the citrine wouldn't have been talked about any more at all if, in the middle of the 18th century, it had not been for the discovery that amethysts and smoky quartzes can also be rendered yellow by so-called burning. Historically, it has been found in Spain, on the Scottish island of Arran, in France, Hungary and in several mines overseas. Rare though it is, yellow does in fact occur in quartz in Nature, if seldom, when there are traces of iron in the silicon dioxide. However, the citrine fulfils everyone's colour wishes, from lemon yellow to reddish brown. A diamond or a sapphire may be yellow - those will be expensive -, or sometimes a tourmaline or chrysoberyl, though these tend toward green somewhat, a golden beryl or eben a pure topaz, which we will mention again later on. There are not many yellow gemstones in the world of jewels. Like golden Rhine wine or sparkling Madeira, heavy and sweet, citrine jewellery shimmers and brings a hint of sunshine to those dull November days. ![]() ![]() Even if their refractive index is relatively low, the yellow stones have just that mellow, warm tone that seems to have captured the last glow of autumn. It won't immediately take offence at being knocked about either, since its cleavage properties are non-existent. Like all crystal quartzes, the citrine has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and is thus, to a large extent, insensitive to scratches. The name is derived from the colour - the yellow of the lemon -, although the most sought-after stones have a clear, radiant yellowish to brownish red. And it does so at prices which are by no means unaffordable. However, the citrine is a member of the large quartz family, a family which, with its multitude of colours and very various structures, offers gemstone lovers almost everything their hearts desire in terms of adornment and decoration, from absolutely clear rock crystal to black onyx. Thus the history of the citrine is closely interwoven with that of the topaz, and coincides with it completely when it comes to the interpretation of alleged miraculous powers. Many people have come to know and love this stone under the name gold topaz, or Madeira or Spanish topaz, although in actual fact it has very little in common with the higher-quality gemstone topaz - except for a few nuances of colour. Interestingly, a popular gemstone on the market is a mixture of half amethyst and half citrine and is given the name ametrine, made by heating an amethyst until it turns into citrine, then irradiating a part of the resulting crystal or gemstone to convert that portion back to amethyst.Ĭitrine, the stone for the month of November. ![]() Citrine made by heating amethyst may be returned to a purple color by bombarding it with beta radiation. Much of the natural citrine may have started out as amethyst but heat from nearby magmatic bodies may have caused the change to citrine. Citrines whose colors have been produced by artificial means tend to have much more of an orange or reddish caste than those found in nature, which are usually a pale yellow. Specimens of low grade, inexpensive amethyst or smoky quartz are often cooked at high temperatures to produce the more profitable orange yellow citrine. Most citrines on the market have been heat treated. Although often cut as a gemstone, citrine is actually somewhat rare in nature. Citrine is any quartz crystal or cluster that is yellow or orange in color. ![]() Lemström, K., Ukkonen, E.: Including interval encoding into edit distance based music comparison and retrieval. At the break, he needed fluids and had his ankle retaped, then returned with a dogged determination to help the Nuggets however he could to pull even in the series.īryant and Pau Gasol (21 points) kept the Lakers within striking distance. Making matters worse, he turned his right ankle in the first half. 'Melo's shooting slump continued as he went 3-for-16 and missed his first 10 shots. The game featured four technical fouls and 84 free throws, 49 by Denver. He put a scare into the Nuggets and their fans until Smith hit back-to-back dagger 3-pointers for a 113-96 cushion.Īnthony finished with a hard-fought 15 points, and Martin had 13 points and 15 boards. The Nuggets didn't need to worry about a botched inbounds pass in the closing seconds like the ones that cost them wins in Games 1 and 3, although Kobe Bryant had another monster fourth quarter in a furious attempt to put a stranglehold on the series that shifts to Los Angeles for Game 5 Wednesday night.īryant, who is averaging 37 points in the series, scored 34, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Smith scored 24 points and Kenyon Martin posted a double-double as the Nuggets posted their eighth blowout of the postseason but first against Los Angeles following three games that came down to the final seconds. The numbers speak for themselves: 36 points in the fourth quarter on 69% is gonna make it really hard to win a game in the NBA Finals.DENVER - The Denver Nuggets evened the Western Conference finals Monday night, beating the Los Angeles Lakers 120-101 in Game 4 despite a hobbled Carmelo Anthony.Ĭhauncey Billups and J.R. “Just our inability or unwillingness to get stops and have a defensive mindset in the fourth quarter was very problematic. “They came out in that third quarter with a huge sense of desperation, and we didn’t match that,” Malone said. Miami is one of the most difficult cities to play, exponentially when there’s a championship on the line, and Malone’s Nuggets suddenly find themselves in must-win territory. This is uncharted territory: His first appearance in the NBA Finals, and his first home playoff loss of this postseason run. Now Malone faces all the pressure in the world. It steeled us, and we developed some grit, which is what we all want, right? We all want to be able to have that privilege of having adversity and being able to overcome it. “And because of all that adversity and the 57 close games that happened due to a lot of that, it hardened us. “We faced a lot of adversity during the season, and we handled it the right way, where you’re not making excuses about it: the injuries, the changing lineups,” Spoelstra said. Former All-Star Victor Oladipo also suffered a season-ending leg injury in Game 5 of the same series. He’s done more with less this time around: Former Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro has missed the entire playoffs with a wrist injury suffered in Game 1 of the first-round series against the Milwaukee Bucks. He had been fortunate enough to coach three sure-fire Hall of Famers the last time his Heat team competed for championships. And then last season, Spoelstra coached the Heat to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they lost to the Boston Celtics in Game 7. 8/10/2023 0 Comments Darq strange key![]() Interactions with puzzle elements are often accompanied with loud, sharp sound effects that pierce through the quiet halls of the levels they’re in, always instilling a sense of unease when you’re poking around Darq’s dreary world. But the silence only accentuates the quality of a creaking wheelchair moving slowly towards you or the sharp screams of enemies alerted to your presence when entering a room. Darq can be terrifyingly silent at times, with only your footsteps echoing into the distance for long stretches at a time. Part of what makes each of these spaces stand out is the exceptional sound design. Darq runs the gamut on cliché spooky spaces, but it realizes them so well in its visual style that they feel fresh rather than cheesy. The variety in levels, from an abandoned hospital to a coal-drenched locomotive, does a lot to flesh out the world. Your character features stick-like appendages and empty black eyes which match well with the gloomy, dreary world filled with oppressive grey hues and a pervasive industrial revolution theme. Its vision of the subconscious can easily be compared to classic Tim Burton films. The haunting monsters present a real threat in what is otherwise an entirely made-up world, with the underlying premise of lucid dreams allowing for all the otherworldly mechanics that Darq offers. In contrast to the thoughtful puzzles that surround it, Darq’s stealth is underwhelming. These sections are little more than forced frustrations, some of which you’ll have to repeatedly engage with when backtracking through levels. Most of the time you simply wait for an enemy to pass an obvious hiding spot before darting into it and waiting for them to pass back around, stripping you of any creativity to your approach. Stealth is your only option in these instances, but it's limited in execution. The few monsters in Darq are shocking figures with contorted appendages and bizarre experimentations that are quick to attack, tearing you apart violently should you get too close. Navigating levels and figuring out their multiple routes is a joy, but exploration is occasionally tripped up by enemy encounters. ![]() Darq isn’t incredibly challenging, but after learning the ins and outs of different mechanics over the course of the game, it's satisfying to solve a puzzle that combines the principles you've mastered. A just-out-of-reach gear suggests to you that there must be a new mechanic that allows you to reach it, for example, eventually teaching you that you can walk on walls without the need for tutorialized text. Each of these is introduced with well-constructed puzzles that gently show you the possibilities, eventually culminating in later levels where all of them are used together to create tricky conundrums. You start by only having to worry about shifting gravity, but it’s not long before you have to consider levers that rotate whole rooms or switches that throw you backwards and forwards through an otherwise 2D plane. Given the dream setting, there are a few instances where the items you need to solve a puzzle don't make sense-a wristwatch grows and bridges a gap in the floor, or a snake is used to mend a broken electrical circuit-but given that you never hold more than just a handful of items at a time, it's easy enough to eliminate ones that won’t work and experiment with the rest without getting frustrated.Įach of Darq’s chapters is themed around a new mechanic, which is then carried through to subsequent levels. A cog, for instance, is used on machines where it is evident that they are missing, while a key will be labelled for the object it’s meant to unlock. There aren’t obscure solutions for the most part, either, allowing you to focus instead on the challenge of finding ways to change your perspective. Your progress through a chapter is inhibited by your ability to find the right item for the job. ![]() Mordor, despite being a deliberately desolate land, still finds ways to have defined areas so the game world isn’t too similar throughout, orc fortresses and ruins helping to give areas more character and the game even choosing to later explore a less-traveled area of Mordor with a distinctly different geography and tone. The game isn’t quite the sweeping epic journeys that the books it pulls from are, partly because of its limited setting, but its story does feel a good fit for the adventure being told. Even Gollum, a character whose sole focus on the One Ring of power could have relegated him to a weak cameo, finds a legitimate reason for his presence in the plot that doesn’t feel forced. Familiar faces for Tolkien fans show up as well, but they are not an overwhelming or showstopping presence, each one having a purpose for being there. There are new and interesting personalities to encounter along the way too so we’re not just left with Talion and the wraith to work with, a dwarf who loves to hunt having an over-the-top personality that draws out some more jovial moments from the usually stoic and focused Talion and a cowardly and silly orc named Ratbag serving as an unfortunate ally for Talion as his early attempts to manipulate the power structure of Mordor involve him teaming up with the only orc willing to work with a human. Talion himself is a new invention, as are his main rivals during his quest through Mordor for revenge, Sauron having a few new high-ranking servants who serve as targets Talion can face in a battle whose fates are not a foregone conclusion despite this being a prequel to the true conflict with Sauron that other characters are involved with. The integration of series elements is done quite expertly in Shadow of Mordor, the game putting a lot of focus on original or unexplored elements of the Lord of the Rings canon while still mixing in some familiar faces. Instead, he’ll need to learn the hierarchy of the orc forces, taking down key commanders and manipulating the stronger Uruks to diminish their power and force out the leaders responsible for his own death and the death of Talion’s family. Mordor is teeming with orcs though, and while Talion’s inability to stay dead means he can fight them endlessly, he can’t necessarily fight them effectively if he just charges at them with just his sword and ghostly powers. Talion and his new wraith ally now share one body, heading off into Mordor with a mix of Talion’s martial prowess and the abilities of the spectral amnesiac. However, Talion is not yet allowed to die, a wraith choosing him to be his host as it tries to discover its old identity and finish whatever business keeps it trapped between life and death. Talion is a man who stands watch on the wall that separates the desolate and dark lands of Mordor from the rest of the medieval fantasy realm of Middle-earth, but he proves a poor defender when the orcs of Mordor launch an attack on it, the minions of Sauron slaying him with ease as the dark lord begins to rebuild his power between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. ![]() The game begins though, quite surprisingly, with our protagonist’s death.
